And when I say airbrushing I mean real airbrushing, no digital mediums were use it.
Commission. Acrylic on Board.
The airbrushing stage. It's not like a step by step. This is a week of work, I didn't took too much pictures, it really breaks my concentration. Anyway, overall you can see the progress and have and idea how it works. Sometimes less explanation and more observation is better. That's how I learned from Sorayama's books. I broke my head in those days trying to deciphering those few steps that he put in his books.
This technique is based in the drawing. The airbrushing part is piece of cake is you have good drawing and a good reference. HINT: Buy a good printer so you print your references with the right colors, it will save you tons of time.
So there's 4 layers of color in the skin: light skin tone, bright skin tone, medium brown and dark brown. I do the light effects with white and adjust the balance of the color with red and yellow. Everything in diluted portions of ink, little by little.
It's not about covering the pencil but add color to the pencil. If I could peel the ink out of the pencils it will be a transparent film or layer of ink.
Some people think this technique is a waste of time. To be honest I kind of think the same sometimes . However there's no question that the drawing is the key to transcend from this [link] to this [link] . With the time I have learned to save some time with the pencils and draw just the essential. That's why my pencil drawings are a little "pale".
There's tons of special effects in the face. I may need to write a book to describe all of them . Just for example, there's 4 colors on each eyelash which takes like 25 minutes each. I discovered all this by myself. It's just matter of get your hands dirt with graphite and ink and trash a lot of good drawings.
I'm not a good teacher. Last time that I tried to teach someone I fail miserably. It's easy to teach people how to use the tools. But art is 80% done in your head. You draw with the eyes not the hand. I tried to teach philosophy and drawing at the same time. But some people just doesn't have an artist brain. Whatever you said it will enter in one ear and go out right away from the other ear.
It is not that hard, is just matter to open your mind. Bend the rules in your mind, like in the Matrix . Unfortunately you can't just download a master degree in your head like in the movie. It takes a lot of practice, discipline, dedication and determination.
But I'm starting to sound like an old dude so I'm out, I'm gonna eat some tacos
The hair stage is next. That's when the pencil stage pays off
I'm really enjoying painting this painting. I'm in the Zone

Diablos Armando... se que dices que lo mas importante es el lapiz, y estoy deacuerdo. Pero no coincido contigo que tu tecnica de aerografo es promedio.

I never make the same mistake twice...I usually get it wrong about four or five times before I finally get it right.
